Vince's Place helps clients beat addiction

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Staff Writer

Vince's Place is the Rescue Mission of Trenton's licensed residential addiction treatment program for clients with special needs, particularly those with a history of homelessness, involvement with the criminal justice system, and those who have had a lifetime of joblessness, underemployment and the devastation of poverty.

Participants receive individual and group counseling, medical supervision, recreation and other support, and social services. Vince's Place is licensed by the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services as a residential addictions treatment facility with 75 beds. There are three special units at Vince's Place: long-term, a halfway house and extended care.

The long-term unit is a residential addiction treatment program that includes residents who have been referred from different sources. Additionally, Vince's Place has residents who self-refer or who have been referred through the Homeless Assessment Referral (HAR) program in the mission's emergency shelter. Many of these clients have little or no previous treatment experience.

The halfway house is for individuals who need time to transition into or out of treatment with focus on obtaining life skills and employment. Extended care is for individuals who have been or are expected to be in residence for more than one year.

One former resident said, "I started using drugs very late in my life. I was 29 years old. My life became so messed up I didn't know what to do so I tried the easy way out. I tried to commit suicide by hanging myself. I was referred to Vince's Place at the Rescue Mission of Trenton.

"Since I've been here, the program has helped me regain my self-respect and get my soul back. I formed a bond between myself and God and am starting my life over. Drugs have destroyed my life, but now things are so much better for me."

Funds from this year's Holiday Appeal will be used to support the Rescue Mission's broad range of programs for the homeless, the hungry, the transient and the addicted.

Hutchinson Industries has pledged to match the first $25,000 raised from contributors, challenging the community to be generous this holiday season.
