Rescue Mission client finds college success

Not everyone makes it at the Rescue Mission of Trenton, but the organization can cite dozens of examples of former residents such as Rodney Hargis, who had sunk into the depths of addiction and has rebuilt his life with the help and the support of the Mission.

Rodney Hargis arrived at the Mission in January of 2005 and left about two years later. After he left, he enrolled at Mercer County College. He was one of three selected from approximately 1,000 applicants for a $5,000 national scholarship and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for community colleges.

In 2009, Hargis was selected to be the commencement speaker for his graduating class at Mercer Community College. He closed his speech by quoting author Harper Lee, who wrote, "Real courage is when you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through -- no matter what."

The Times reported in a feature story on May 22, 2009, that "Rodney Hargis, of Hamilton, started at Mercer in January 2007, continuing the college education that he began in 1990. He graduated with highest honors yesterday, having struggled to leave behind years of addiction and other personal issues that landed him at the Rescue Mission of Trenton."

The staff and volunteers at the Rescue Mission of Trenton know that overcoming the disease of addiction is very difficult. That is why they have adhered over the years to the policy of providing multiple opportunities, if space is available, to individuals to overcome the disease of addiction.

They are proud that there is place in our community dedicated to remaking, reshaping and rebuilding lives and that the community-at-large is so supportive of its work.

Funds from this year's Holiday Appeal will be used to support the Rescue Mission's broad range of programs for the homeless, the hungry, the transient and the addicted.

Hutchinson Industries, a longtime supporter of the Rescue Mission of Trenton, has pledged to match the first $25,000 raised from contributors, challenging the community to be generous this holiday season.
